Adoption

A prayer for the one who I do not yet know…

I envision your sweet face of ebony,
eyes and hair and skin beautiful spectrums of brown and black that your Father shaded perfectly as he formed you in your mother’s womb
A womb different from my own, but a womb belonging to a woman who is just as seen, just as cherished, just as loved as I- your future forever momma- am by Him

My heart longs to know the intricacies of your footprints, your perhaps plump cheeks, your laugh
Do you laugh yet?
Are you taken care of?
Did you know your future sister asks about you every day?
-Her, asking hard questions to which I barely know how to reply…
What hidden shadows will you carry in your heart as it remembers the unseen traumas, remnants of those questions to which I may never know the answers?
Are you still carried inside and attached to the one who chose life for you, yet for some reason, unknown to me but intimately known to her Creator, is unable to care for you?
Or have you emerged to the world and already tasted the bitter loss of the sounds and smells of the only person you’ve ever been held by so far?

Oh dear one, I’m so sorry it has to be this way
There is no easy answer to your situation
No perfect way out that eliminates all brokenness
Only when your Savior comes again will it all be made new
And for that day we will long and learn about, together
But until then…
We will love you, even now before we know your face or name
And we will continue to, as a family, step bravely into the quiet places of interceding on your behalf
Entering in confidence the throne room of our Good Shepherd
Who knows every curly hair on your precious head
And knows what you need before you have the ability to even speak the words

There is a home waiting for you
A family who is ready to walk through all the hard and love you harder through it all
We won’t always get it right and will inevitably fail you in one way or another
But may we always do so with open, humble hearts
Ready to point you to Him. Him who has seen every chapter of your story and is endlessly trustworthy through every page
Because you are so loved
And you will continue to be loved
By the One who created you
And by the ones who didn’t create you but who will always be yours
Now and forevermore
Spread the love
